1/28/06 I got a UTI, waited until 30th and went to the Dr. He put me on a Sulfa RX, and in two days they called and said the bacteria was resistant to the Sulfa. That's when the Dr. prescribed Nitrofurantoin. I couldn't take the meds until the next day, as I had already taken the doses of Sulfa. On Wed. Feb. 1st I started the RX. by the time I took my second pill I was feeling pretty sick, but a few hours later I was flat out ill. I had chills so bad I shook for three hours, nausea, and then I started throwing up. I did this for several hours, and the pain was so bad I could hardly stand it. My head hurt like a migraine, and pain wracked my whole body. The next day my husband took me to the Dr. and he said to stop taking the Nitrofurantoin. (of course I already had!) That was almost a week ago, and am still experiencing symptoms like: weakness, headaches, chills, hurts behind my eyes, my back hurts when I am up too long. I feel jittery and nervous. I just don't feel normal. By the way, I hadn't thrown up for twenty years. I also had a 101 degree fever. I never run fevers! I will never take this medication again, and I am afraid to try anything else. I did take Cipro for three days to clear up the infection, so maybe when I get rid of what's in my system, I'll feel normal again. I am 63 yrs, and have never felt this bad before.

Hello, how are you feeling now? I'm on my 14 day since I took my last pill. I was prescribed 14 pills over 7 days. I only took 4 and I went crazy. Swollen hands and feet which were red, hives all over my body, dizziness, sick to my stomach, no appetite, jerking legs and arms that I can't control. I stopped over 4 days, no more hives, but I'm afraid still as I cannot walk too far and I"m out of breath still.

How many pills did you take since Feb 8th you said? What symptoms do you have still?

My 15 yr old daughter has taken this medication two other times. The last time she took it, three days into treatment she started running a fever and having difficulty breathing. The Dr. said she had pneumonia and she was given another antibiotic. She got another bladder infection this week and was given Macrobid again. Three hours after her first dose she started having a cough every time she tried to take a deep breath. She said she felt like she did when she had pneumonia. Her chest felt heavy and hurt. 4 hours after her second dose she was runniing a 102 degree fever had chills, body aches, she felt agitated like she couldn't sit still. Bad headache and dizziness and almost passed out. I called the Dr. and told them she was experiencing every side effect except for the rash. Her skin even hurt. She was having a reaction to the Macrobid but nobody put two and two together the last time when they thought she had pneumonia. They switched her to Cipro and she will never take Macrobid again. It has been two days since stopping the drug and her fever is still 100.

I'm so glad I found this site. I have a UTI right now and just came home from the doctor who presribed Macrobid. I had never taken it before so I wanted to get some info on the Internet before taking it and I'm glad I did! This drug sounds like it has some terrible side effects so I'm going to hold off and call my doctor back tomorrow and tell him to put me on Cipro instead. Wow... I hope you all feel better soon and thank God for this site.
