I got bladder infections alot, was antibiotics at least twice a year. About 5 years ago, I was on sulfatrim and I developed the worst headache I'd ever had in my life. My doctor told me she'd make a note to never give it to me again.
About a year or two later, I took macrobid, and had a horrible reaction to it that lasted months and months. A lot of people have said that sulfa drugs and macrobid are related, so if you have had any kind of reaction to sulfa drugs, be very wary of macrobid. If you have to take it, make sure you stop at the first sign of any kind of reaction (the symptoms can vary widely - from exhaustion, dizziness, tingling or burning of arms, hands, legs or feet, headache, head pressure, shortness of breath, redness of face or feeling hot and flushed in the face, racing heartbeat, and more).
Make sure to take symptoms seriously. |

I had a terrifying experience with Bactrim four months ago. It was prescribed for a mild sinus infection. As I became more and more ill, doctors kept telling me Bactrim couldn't be causing my symptoms. It started after 3-4 days with flu-like symptoms and overheating, and at 7 days my face swelled up and my body was covered in an itchy, hot rash. I thought I was dying and had a total emotional breakdown. That day I quit taking the drug. My skin was very red for a week even with prednisone and antihistimines, and it was at least a month later before I could climb a flight of stairs without gasping for air (I'm an active 26-year-old.) Four months later, my skin, especially on my face, still has a reddish tinge.
Yesterday I started on Macrobid after a very sudden and painful UTI--one minute I was fine, three hours later I was in agony and peeing blood. I told the doctor I was allergic to Bactrim and she said Macrobid was completely unrelated. After three pills I feel exhausted, dizzy, nauseated, and achy. After reading other people's reactions there is no way I will take another dose of this medicine. Thanks to everyone who has shared their stories and making it possible for us to take better care of our health. |
