Macrobid can cause "hypersenitivity" reactions to any person, young or old. They call it hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin, because some people are affected by the damaging effects of the drug, and they don't know why. The drug is a neurotoxin and a free radical, and the drug can affect the nervous system and also the lungs. Some of the symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction are extreme tiredness, dizziness, flushing of the face or other parts of the body, arms and legs falling asleep easily, burning or tingling of parts of the body, stabbing pains, pressure build up in the head or behind the eyes, shortness of breath, numbness of parts of the body, problems sleeping, chills, sweats, and more.

Some people have only one or a few of the symptoms, some people get many more. I got all of the symptoms listed above. Has any one else experienced these symptoms from macrobid (macrodantin, furadantin, aka nitrofurantoin)?

Took Macrobid last January 2004, and within 24 hours I suffered severe chills and aching bones.. Also had feeling of pressure in my head which lasted 5 or 6 months.
I am still suffering daily chills which run down my body in waves. Drs. refuse to accept that this is a reaction to drug and have put me through numerous hospital tests with no results.
I have accepted that this is my permanent condition and don't even mention it to doctors any more as I refuse to become a medical "victim" and spend my life having one test after another.
Reading the web sites has helped convince me that this is definately the drug's side effects .

It is so disappointing that doctors don't research into drug reactions even when people have debilitating and long lasting problems from them. I know a woman who had terrible nerve problems that caused burning, tingling pain throughout her head area that was caused by macrobid. She went to a few neurologists and they told her that nitrofurantoin couldn't cause it. It is so sad that now she feels that she can't even tell doctors the cause of her neuropathy because they won't believe her and look at her like she is insane. But it is written as clear as day in the drug specs from procter and gamble that macrobid can cause nerve problems. I have lost a lot of respect for the medical community.

I keep reading more and more posts on forums of people affected by macrobid. And the ages are all over the place- from 20 to 70 years old. A hypersensitivity reaction can happen to anyone without warning.
