In November I took macrodantin for recurring urinary tract infections. I was instructed by my gynecologist to take one tablet each time I engaged in sexual activity, as sexual activity and urinary tract infection often go hand in hand for post menopausal women.
I took three tablets in as many weeks. Within 30 minutes of taking the first tablet, I felt nauseous, but did not connect this with the medication; the next day I thought I had a "one day flu" -- nausea, dizziness, extreme sleepiness.
The next time I took a macrodantin, I got very nauseous and started wheezing (I am mildly asthmatic -- controlled with medications). I attributed this to the fact that my husband and I had been to a birthday dinner and split a bottle of wine.
The third time I took macrodantin, within 30 minutes I was red from head to toe and went to emergency where they said I had a severe reaction to the medication and gave me Benadryl and Zantac in an IV. When they discharged me they said to continue Benadryl and Zantac in tablet form (high doses) for 24 hours, and to avoid hot showers, spicy food, or becoming overheated for at least a week as the reaction could return for at least that long.
I had no further problems for three weeks. Then the redness returned after dinner one night -- a hot feeling, this time beginning in my legs and buttocks and spreading upward, and very red blotchy skin. Since that time I have had episodes of this an average of twice a week. I have been to an internist and an allergist. Neither one will attribute this to the macrodantin -- they say it was too long ago that I took it. But they can't tell me any other cause either. I have kept food diaries and can't link it to any specific food, though I can't drink alcoholic beverages at all, and have gotten reactions when I eat anything with sulfites. But I have also gotten it when I've eaten absolutely nothing!
The allergist has had numerous blood tests performed and I've even been tested for rare things like carcinoid syndrome and adrenal tumors -- all negative. So they call it "chronic idiopathic urticaria" -- meaning I have a rash and they don't know why.
It would seem logical that since I never had this before I took Macrodantin, and since it is a reaction identical to the Macrodantin reaction that sent me to emergency, they would be connected.
Has anyone else had this particular symptom? If so, how long did it last? I has been two months since I took the macrodantin, and one month since the rashes recurred. |

| I have read on many other forums about people getting severe rashes from nitrofurantoin. Another place to read more posts from people affected by macrobid is called Ask a Patient. The website address is triplew.askapatient.com |
