I have heard from a few sources that Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) is derived from a sulfa type substance and that if you are allergic to sulfa drugs that you should not take it. I previously got severe headaches with sulfatrim, and later took nitrofurantoin and had an extremely bad reaction. EVERYONE that I have talked to who were allergic to sulfa drugs also went on to have bad reactions to Macrobid. If you are allergic to sulfa drugs, I would stay away from any nitrofurantoin based drugs unless you have no other choice.

And if you experience any side effects from macrobid (or sulfatrim/bactrim) like: extreme tiredness, dizziness, redness in the face, tingling of the skin (like the skin falling asleep sensation), numbness, head pressure, fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other side effects, make sure you go to the doctor and get a different prescription, because it means that you are hypersensitive to the drug and it is affecting you.

If you keep taking it, you can develop much worse symptoms. The symptoms might not show up until after you stop taking it (my symptoms started getting worse a few days after I finished my prescription, and I kept developing more and more symptoms for three weeks afterwards.)
